Common Questions Regarding Wireless Security Transmission Units

Often when business owners are setting up their first wireless security camera systems they have some basic questions which almost always come up:

A frequent question is, Can I use audio with a surveillance camera system?

Its complicated, audio recording is not permitted in court or legal proceedings therefore it has no purpose. According to the U.S. legal code audio recording should not be As an example, surreptitious or secret use is audio that comes from a hidden device. So, if your CCTV cameras are in open and in plain sight then audio recordings are viable. However, if the surveillance devices are covert or obscured, like a hidden camera, then audio cannot be utilized.

Hidden cameras would cover pin hole or tiny cameras plus virtually all spy cameras, like a radio with a hidden camera within. Sound recording in a hidden camera or micro camera is only available to legal officers and law enforcement agencies. Many new installers also wish to find out the difference is concerning a wired and a wireless camera system?

A wired security camera system uses a coaxial cable that runs from the security cameras to your recording device like a DVR/ VCR recorder, or live monitor like a TV monitor. A wireless security camera includes a built-in or attached signal transmitter which sends the video signal from your camera to your receiver device. The wireless receiver device is then connected to the recording device or the viewing monitor.

When utilizing a wireless security camera system it is important to think about the distance your wireless cameras are placed from the receiver device. Most wireless security cameras are able to transmit signals as far as 1000ft. while high powered wireless security cameras can transmit asfar as 2500ft.. Such high ranges are based on clear line of sight transmission. The most frequent cause of wireless transmission interference is from phone handsets and cell phones. Cell and handset phones transmit on the 2.4 GHz frequency and will create interference with 2.4 GHz wireless security camera systems. Fortunately interference should be minimal and typically only when your phone is directly between your transmitting camera and your receiver device. Other causes of interference are wireless Internet, networks and WiFi.

The interference you get because of walls and other barriers should be minimal. You will find 2.4 GHz wireless security cameras can send and receive through walls up to 2feet thick, providing your wall is not built with a high amount of metal.

What about having multiple wireless security cameras in one location?

Most wireless surveillance camera setup has more than simply a single camera. You usually find that retail systems provide a max of four wireless security cameras in one area. This is because every device is transmitting its signal on a minor modification of the 2.4 GHz transmitting frequency usually called the channel. If you have more than four then your wireless surveillance cameras will begin to interfere with one another.

If you want to see all of the wireless feeds from your four surveillance cameras simultaneously you will need four unique sets of wireless transmitters and receivers. You wil be able to use a single wireless receiver with four transmitters only if you are willing to toggle back and forth to each camera. You will only be able to view one video feed at a time if you choose to use only one receiver. When using multiple wireless cameras in a single area you will need to toggle the DIP switches for each camera for a different channel.

3. Spy Cam - A camera with a internal DVR which records right to to a Secure Digital Memory card.

A final note lots people ask… Why can’t I record hidden audio? The simple answer is that it breaks federal law and you might go to jail if you secretly record audio.
